FreshAir - the Newsletter for the Industrial Mobility Professional
Welcome to our new-look FreshAir newsletter.
The transformation is complete.

What started 18 months ago as an internal project to turn AirData into a more relevant, customer-centric, profitable and dynamic organisation, is now a reality.

Today AirData is successfully establishing as the leading Industry Mobility Consulting firm, providing winning business solutions, underpinned by our 30 year history, leading software and winning partnerships with best-of-breed suppliers of hardware and related software. Following a close call during the administration process, we realise that this was the fire that regenerates the forest, now stronger and better equipped for a new lease on life.

The team at AirData is very appreciative, thankful and humbled by the amazing support from a handful of Partners and Clients that believed in us and supported us through that difficult process over 6 months ago. Yes... 6 months... Can you believe it? Thanks to your support, we have remained employed, have been able to develop further tailored solutions that better address your needs and are on-track to over-achieve our aggressive first 6 months target of FY 2011/12, having blown away the first quarter target. Thank you.

While focused on the day-to-day, ensuring that we exceed your expectations, the team at AirData has also been working, behind the scenes, to ensure that the regrowth of AirData continues unabated. Soon you will see a few new announcements, including a new website that better represents our new focus, new software products and more. Stay tuned.

Finally, there is much commentary currently about the next GFC, supposedly around the corner. We believe that as we have seen in the previous GFC, those organisations that are focused on being of true value to their customers, are able to continue to survive, and more; even when times get tough.

We start the New Year feeling quite satisfied with the results to-date and look forward to continuing to be of service to you in 2012.

Seasonal Greetings

Title: Field Service 2011: Mobility and the Extension of the Service Enterprise
By: Sumair Dutta

Article:

The explosion of mobility in both the consumer and enterprise arenas is undeniable. Every day, we are informed about the development and retail of new devices, applications, operating environments, network capabilities and a new level on Angry Birds. Just as the selection of the right device and right plan can be overwhelming for everyday consumers, the amount of information that needs to be sifted through when considering the mobilization of a field service workforce for an enterprise can be crippling. Business leaders, in service, IT or otherwise, cannot ignore the importance or impact of mobility on their service operations. Those leaders that are successful fully fathom the opportunity provided by mobile tools and applications, and treat mobility as an extension of their IT and business strategy, requiring buy in and collaboration from all parties involved.

Best-in-Class Performance

In May and June 2011, Aberdeen Group surveyed over 200 service professionals. Organizations defined as Best-in-Class exhibited the following:

  • 82% average first-time fix performance (65% for all others) and a 15% average decrease in service cost over the previous 12 months
  • 76% average level of workforce utilization (57% for all others) and a 16% increase in workforce productivity over the previous year
Competitive Maturity Assessment Survey results show that the firms enjoying Best-in-Class performance are:
  • More than two times as likely as Laggards (70% vs. 31%) to have a mobile application for field service in place
  • Nearly two times as likely as all others (62% vs. 34%) to integrate field data with enterprise systems in real-time
  • 15% more likely than all others (38% vs. 33%) to have a standardized mobile strategy across the enterprise
  • 49% more likely than Laggards to leverage a cross-functional team of executives and users to define, manage and support mobile requirements
Required Actions To achieve Best-in-Class performance, companies must:
  • Assess current performance and build a scalable mobile roadmap
  • Improve integration between parts management and field service and provide up to date parts information to field technicians
  • Continue to drive data driven collaboration across the entire organization

It's about business, not Technology!

This sounds almost contradictory coming from AirData, established and known as a technology supplier. However, we clearly understand and promote the concept that technology is merely the vehicle that assists organisations achieve their business objectives. This belief runs through every quote, presentation, proposal and consultation we undertake. It is our job to clearly understand your business drivers, your business objectives in order for us to propose a solution through technology that addresses these objectives.

The concept of business outcomes through technology is so ingrained into our DNA that our internal processes revolve around this. Let me share with you our solution process, to give you an insight about how we ensure that your business objectives are at the core of what we do.

To start with, we have no Sales Executives, we have Industrial Mobility Consultants. And no, this is not just a cutesy marketing strategy to address those well worn cliches. We are business people working with you to come-up with creative solutions that deliver the best ROI for your project.

The following are the stages that our Industrial Mobility Consultants utilise, following a preliminary proposal, in order to deliver business-centric technology solutions:

  • Business Process Review is carried out by our expert Professional Services Team, requires your involvement and takes about 4 weeks.
  • This will give us the information required for our technical analysis step to ensure that we are able to translate the requirements into technological solutions.
  • Pilot Trial in Controlled Environment - Once the solution is customized to meet the requirements as identified and verified in the BPR stage, we pilot the solution with 1 or 2 select teams that would usually include the staff that have been involved from day 1 and these become the solution "evangelists".
  • Final Mods and Training - Train-the-Trainer Training manuals are now developed once the final mods have been applied to the solution, training is carried out and all is set to roll-out.
  • Deployment - includes a roll-out plan, and post deployment assessment to ensure the project meets the objectives as set-out in the BPR.
  • Field Staff Involvement - It is recommended that from the early days of the project, that 1 or 2 field-staff members are involved in the project. They are involved in every step of the project and become the ambassadors, mentor and evangelists of the solution.

Over the next few issues of FreshAir, we shall get into the detail of each of these stages to explain how this achieves your required outcomes and objectives, as well as your business imperatives.
